In a step toward increasing the supply of affordable housing in the community, Council has approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Town of Saugeen Shores, Habitat for Humanity, and Wilson Developments.
"The MOU provides a framework to investigate and work towards an agreement to build up to 30 townhouse units on town-owned land south of Concession 10," read a February 25 media release from the Town. Of those units two would be transferred to the municipality in support of affordable housing goals while up to five units would be transferred to Habitat for Humanity for qualifying applicants through their attainable and affordable ownership program.
The MOU details the participating parties' expected roles with the Town providing the land, water and sewer connections, in-kind support and services, as well as fee reductions; while Wilson Developments will construct the dwellings.
Following Council's approval of the Affordable Housing on Town-owned Land Policy in March of 2024, this is the first time the policy has been put into action. The Town will continue to aim to reduce barriers to building, establish a framework to allow financial incentives for affordable developments, and implement other initiatives like its partnership with Bruce County to deliver the Housing Allowance Subsidy.
Other affordable housing initiatives set out for 2025 can be viewed in the Planning and Development Division Highlights on page 62 of the 2025 Saugeen Shores Business Plan.
