Summer camp teaches kids circus skills

Thirty-two kids have been having fun at the Southampton Coliseum this week at Circus Camp. The camp ran Monday, August 10th to Friday, August 14th and ended with a circus show Friday on afternoon so the young entertainers could show off their skills and talents.

Instructor Angola Murdoch, founder and Artistic Director of Lookup Theatre, which is a charitable not-for-profit company performing theatre, circus and aerial arts for rural and urban communities in Ontario, said that they have been doing the camp every year for the last three years. “Lots of the kids have actually come three years in a row, which is cool,” she said.

“I've been performing for 15 years with different companies. I've been all over the world,” said Murdoch. “I've been on boats, traditional circus and contemporary circus.” She said that her own specialty is the aerial silk and that she will be heading to Edmonton in the Fall for two weeks to be with the Firefly circus out there.

The Saugeen Shores Summer camp was for ages 7 to 14 years to learn skills such as trapeze, hoop, aerial skills, juggling, hula hoop, tight wire and clowning.
