Winterama on a Winter’s day

Cold temperatures and blowing snow was no match against the delight and exuberant energy of the students from École Port Elgin Saugeen Central during their own Winterama event February 25 put on by the school’s ME to WE program.

Students from grades one to six were mixed into groups to work as a team and have fun at many different outdoor activities, including Tug o’ War, Capture the Chicken (Capture the Flag), Soccer Drills and Snow Ball Toss, and much more. Older students Madi McNeill and Maggie Corkin, both in grade seven, had fun running their own station which was a mixture of throwing snowballs through hoops and outdoor hockey.

“We’re all just outside, celebrating winter. It’s kinda cute seeing them (younger students) running around chasing after the ball, and scoring,” McNeil said.

Her station partner, Corkin added that they were having a good time, however, it seemed like the younger kids were having a lot more fun.

For teacher Liz Sollors her favourite part of the day was seeing the older students interacting with the younger ones. “We have split the outdoor session up between the school, where half the students participate in the morning and the other half later in the day. We always have our school Winterama take place the week before or after Rotary Winterama (Febuary 20),” Sollors said through a small opening in her coat.

The Rotary Club will donate a portion of money raised from their Winterama back to the school with a portion going to the school’s ME to WE program.
