Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo. There's magic in the air at St Joseph's School in Port Elgin as the Grade 4 to 8 students, under the direction of teachers Mary-Jane Hewitt and Lindsay Wright, are performing Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella.

Two performances took place May 7 with two additional performances May 8.

Cinderella is the St Joseph's ninth musical production in as many years with last year's production taking on the classic, Beauty and The Beast.

With over 40 students taking to the stage as well as many behind the scenes, the show offers plenty of action, singing and dancing; all highlighted by brightly coloured costumes and sets.

Co-director and co-producer Mary-Jane Hewitt said that auditions for the show started after the Christmas holidays with most recesses being consumed by the production as well as some after school and March Break rehearsals.

Going from rags to fancy dresses, Cinderella is played by Grade 7 student Julia Trelford who said the biggest challenge of playing the main character was the costumes. “Getting my costumes on and off in the right time,” she said. “I have all these layers to put on.”

St Joseph's teacher Ashley Clark said that teachers, including some retired ones, also played heavily in the production, building props and sets and making costumes.

May 8 performances will take place at St Joseph's School, 584 Stafford Street. Admission is by donation at the door with all funds going to support future performances.
