Princess Ray-Bana welcomed children and their families as Saugeen Shores Family Eye Care (SSFEC) held their seventh annual UV Groovy Day July 10 in support of the local hospital.

With cupcake decorating, balloon animals, bubbles, face painting and photos with a princess, it was an afternoon of fun. Southampton Rotary was on hand preparing food for hungry attendees and Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre was there to explain about their children's programs.

SSFEC Office Manager Steph Carr said that as well as fundraising for the hospital the event was to promote eye protection for children. “A lot of people don't realize that kids need their eyes protected too,” she said, adding that 80 percent of sun damage occurs before children are 18. "We want to make sure that we're getting them protected," she said.

Free sunglasses for babies were available at the event to help children get used to wearing them from a young age. “A lot of times we forget or they won't wear them,” said SSFEC Optometrist Kristen Robinson. “It's challenging so we give up but they do get a lot of damage, even with a hat you're still getting reflections off of everything," she said.

Robinson added that more children were now starting to wear sunglasses. “They're making more cool brands and they're more affordable,” she said.

Money was raised from the event through the Rotary barbecue, a bake sale and a raffle, all of it donated to the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation.
