Savoury tastes, mouthwatering smells, and affordable prices is what one will find when picking up their creative plate take home meals from Southampton’s new catering business, Little Black Dog. Owned and operated by Saugeen Shores' Stacey Hull and Kendra Smith, Little Black Dog is able to feed a party of 75 to a party of one, and features a monthly menu that is rotated through bi-weekly.

The storefront is located at 19 Albert Street South, across from the Art Gallery in Southampton, and opened on March 14. Throughout the month of March, Little Black Dog will be open Monday through Wednesday and open five days a week (Monday to Friday) indefinitely starting in April.

While preparing the meals on their opening day, Stacey Hull said that there has been a lot of interest in their new business.

“We’re trying to be positive, and just do what we love, and hope people respond to it. It’s just getting people to try it, and I think once they do it may be something they use on a regular basis,” said Hull while she was preparing seasonal vegetables.

“Many people are getting into meal planning, so they can order it the day before and pick it up and heat it between hockey practises or dance classes; and it’s healthy and delicious,” added Hull.

“We let the ingredients inspire us,” said Kendra Smith, who in 2015 won Chopped Canada, a cooking competition television show.

“We make everything from scratch, and we do a flavour profile, a bit of a theme. Like, today (March 14) we have the Italian Turkey Sausage Meatballs and the Fire Roasted Roasted Tomatoes (soup),” said Smith about the flavour pairing.

Hull added, "we buy local with our meat, and we just use what our suppliers have right now; and come summer the vegetables will be local as well.”

The duo said that they are looking into delivery options, but as of right now meals can be picked up between 4 and 7 p.m. In cases of clients with mobility issues, alternate delivery options may be able to be arranged. Meals are asked to be ordered 24 hours in advance but one can try their luck on the day of, to see if there is anything still available.

Little Black Dog’s monthly menu is featured on their website www.littleblackdogcatering.com, and updates are posted to their Facebook page regularly. Soups, Salads and Desserts are sold for $5 (not including tax) with entrees go for $15.

Little Black Dog is not limited to just dinners, they also provide lunches, cater brunches and holiday feasts. Chef Kendra Smith will also be hosting private and group cooking classes.
