Bruce County Museum aims to break the silence

breaking the silence

Each May Canadians rally to support Mental Health Week May 7 to May 13, when people are encouraged to talk about mental health, raise awareness and support and share stories or experiences. This year the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre (BCM&CC) is pleased to present an exhibition created by Artist, Mother and Registered Practical Nurse Melissa Comyn.

In a BCM&CC media release, Comyn’s own journey both professionally and personally have inspired her to create this exhibition. “By highlighting the challenges someone with mental health concerns could be facing day to day as well as in our healthcare system, it is my hope that these images and concepts presented will give the viewer an insight to the struggle,” said Comyn.

Art can be a healing outlet and expression that engages the viewer to relate and understand what has been expressed. This is an exhibition to expand emotional knowledge and an exercise in empathy.

Due to the sensitive nature of this exhibition BCM&CC encourages anyone requiring more information to contact local healthcare providers Canadian Mental Health Association Grey Bruce or Grey Bruce Health Services and are grateful for the support and partnership of these organizations with this exhibition.

“Breaking the Silence” will be on display from May 7 to May 19 with an opening reception being held on Monday, May 7 at 7 p.m. with opening remarks and light refreshments from the Pea Pod. Please RSVP by calling 519-797-2080 or emailing museum@brucecounty.on.ca if you are interested in attending this event.
