A group of concerned community members from Saugeen First Nation have had enough of drugs and have decided to do something about it.
“We have an epidemic going through our community with regards to drugs,” said Cheryl George in an interview May 17. “We’ve lost several young people,” she added.
“As concerned members of the community we decided to get together and say, ‘Let’s put a stop to this, let’s bring some awareness to our community that we can work together as a group to drive away the problem,” George said.
The group is called “Enough” and they are hosting a community walk on Sunday, May 20 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Community members from Saugeen First Nation as well as Port Elgin, Southampton and surrounding areas are welcome to join.
“We’d encourage people to join us because I know that Southampton and Port Elgin and the surrounding areas are going through the same thing as well, it’s not just Saugeen First Nation,” said George. “This affects so many homes in all areas of Bruce County and Grey County,” she said.
Anyone wishing to take part is asked to gather at the Saugeen Band Office, 6493 Highway 21, at 2:30 p.m. The walk will get underway at 3 p.m. and head south down Highway 21, ending at the Mino Bimaadsawin Health Centre at 57 Mason Drive where a small social will be held.
“We want to bring awareness to the people entering our community, and bringing awareness to the dealers that also come through and say, ‘Look, we’re watching and we’re going to do something about it,’” said George.
