The Power Workers Union presented a $100,000 donation to Grey Bruce Health Services' new mental health and recovery centre.

Representatives from the Power Workers Union attended a hard hat tour of Grey Bruce Health Services new mental health and recovery centre last week where they presented their donation of $100,000 toward the new facility.

In a recent release from Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation, the facility will be located in Owen Sound, is expected to open later this fall and will be the first OHIP covered program of its kind in Canada.

It will aim to provide much needed "wrap around care" that addresses patients as a whole; mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

The program offers longer stays than what has been traditionally offered in recovery programs and also carries an added service of dorm style live-in apartments for anyone who has completed the recovery portion of their treatment plan, may need a place to stay while they continue to learn life skills or don’t have a safe environment to return to.

The program will go beyond traditional detox and recovery and offer life skills training such as doing laundry, cleaning house, preparing healthy meals, creating a budget, grocery shopping and much more.

The facility will also house a workshop space that can teach employable skills, a tech lab to teach computer skills as well as a gym and spiritual space.

The Power Workers' Union donation will be recognized as a naming opportunity for the workshop space, noted SMHF Board Chair Martha Bennett. "We hope the Power Workers Union gift will help inspire other organizations to join them in supporting this wonderful new program and facility that will serve residents right across Bruce and Grey countes," added Bennett.

A public information night is expected to be held in Port Elgin in August (details expected soon) where residents and businesses will have an opportunity to learn about the new facility and ask questions.
