Local department takes fire safety door to door

fullThe Saugeen Shores Fire Department prides itself on being leaders in fire safety and public education. On October 6, as part of Fire Prevention Week, the Saugeen Shores Fire Department will be knocking on doors from 7 to 8:30 pm in all neighborhoods in Port Elgin and Southampton. The firefighters will be checking and answering questions on the following topics:

• Location of the smoke alarms – A smoke alarm is required on every level of a residence and outside all sleeping areas. For extra protection install a smoke alarm in the bedrooms, “Hear the BEEP where You SLEEP.”

• Location of carbon monoxide alarms – As of October 15, 2014, CO alarms are required adjacent to all sleeping areas in homes

• Age of Alarms – Like most things your smoke and CO alarms don’t last forever. Alarms only last seven to 10 years. Check the date on the unit and if in doubt, replace it.

• Maintenance – Test the alarm monthly by pushing the “test” button. Lightly vacuum the front of the unit with an upholstery brush. Change the batteries at least once per year or every time you change the clocks.

This is a voluntary check for your safety and will not be used for fire code enforcement. Early detection, planned escape routes and safe meeting places is key to home fire safety. Most fatal fires occur at night when people are sleeping. A working smoke alarm will detect smoke and sound to alert you. It is the law for all Ontario homes to have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas.

Only working smoke and CO alarms save lives.
