Meet Boss. He is a Norwegian Elkhound, Jindo mix and he, along with his brother Nico and seven others, were rescue dogs, arriving from a facility that was estimated to house 1,000 dogs in Korea December 9. He has been in foster care in Port Elgin until he is able to adjust with hopes of eventually finding his forever home.

“They aren’t your average dogs,” said Kathi Newell-Nicholson, Founder of Adopt-A-Pet Pet Rescue Lucknow. “Like the majority of the nine we took in from Korea. But they are coming along.”

On January 25, the estimated 12 month old dog got away from his foster while they were on a walk, leash and all, in the Bruce and Green Street area of Port Elgin and Adopt-A-Pet notified “dozens” of people and organizations, with many posts being shared again and again on social media; all in the hopes of finding Boss. “It doesn’t look promising,” said Newell-Nicholson in a message to The Hub January 26, adding that Boss was “so scared as it is, then this.”

After three days, Newell-Nicholson was contacted by Animal Control. “I feared the worst,” she said January 28. “She called me and informed me a person on Market Street called to report a dog under their porch that had been there for days.”

The foster was contacted and Boss was picked up. “He was just laying there,” said Newell-Nicholson, who hopes that this story will help people understand the urgency and importance of reporting an animal right away.

Adopt-A-Pet Pet Rescue Lucknow is a non-profit rescue run solely by volunteers. From their website, “We have unclaimed pets from kill-shelters/pounds, animal control, puppy-mill rejects and if we have available space, owner surrenders.”

The Rescue covers “hundreds of kilometres” from Kincardine to London to Southern Ontario and will step outside the region when they are able. “We don’t close doors based on geography.” Adopt-A-Pet takes care of all the veterinary needs prior to adoption.

There are currently over 60 pets available for adoption through Adopt-A-Pet, many of whom, like Boss and Nico, have special requirements.
