The Saugeen Shores community came out to help raise funds for the family of 9 year old Sammy, a GC Huston Public School student who in January was airlifted to London’s Children’s Hospital after suffering a sinus infection that had spread into her brain. Since then the 9 year old has had multiple brain surgeries and spent the first few months of 2018 in critical condition. Friends of Sammy for the first few months of 2018. On April 28 friends of Sammy hosted a ball hockey fundraiser at the Southampton Curling Club where almost $10,000 was raised.
“All proceeds will go to Sammy’s family for living expenses, travel and life while they are in London and whatever Sammy will need when she returns home. The family has also indicated that if they do not use all the funds they will pay it forward,” said event co-organizer Carolyn Sheehan.
Following the fundraiser which featured a “get well” card making station, and a ball hockey expedition. A game featuring local celebrities such as former Saugeen Shores Winterhawk and ex NHL player Theo Peckham, GC Huston Principal Dan Russell, Saugeen Shores Councillor Don Matheson, 98 the Beach radio personalities and a few members of the Saugeen Shores Fire Department, ended in a 2-2 tie.
“We are humbled by the support we have received from this wonderful community,” said Sheehan who also wanted to thank Joseph J Entertainment, the Southampton Curling Club, Southampton Rotary Club, GC Huston staff, local business and the players who came out in one form or another to support the cause.
