A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Pier Donnini, owner of the Queen's Bar and Grill, and the Town of Saugeen Shores was presented by the Director of Community Services, Jayne Jagelewski, to Saugeen Shores Council at the May 27 Committee of Whole meeting in Port Elgin.

The MOU detailed Donnini’s intentions for development at the former Station property on the Port Elgin's Main Beach. The contents of the MOU affirmed that Donnini’s plans will incorporate a food and banquet facility, provide commercial opportunities and recreational space. In addition, Donnini is to attempt to integrate a train into his development.

The MOU strictly stated that residential development is not permitted.

A 50 year land lease agreement was suggested in the MOU to be approved by the Town given that “a solid long-term strategy is provided by Mr. Donnini and the capital investment warrants such agreement,” explained the Director.

Both Mayor Luke Charbonneau and Vice-Deputy Mayor Mike Myatt supported the longer term lease agreement to Donnini and extended the invitation to any business looking to invest in the Port Elgin waterfront to come forth.

“If this passes this evening, those business owners who have land that we do control the lease-link of should take this as a signal from Council that we would be willing to entertain longer lease agreements on the caveat that major investments are made in our property,” said Mayor Charbonneau.

Myatt echoed Charbonneau's sentiments and invited business owners who want to invest in a big way to “come to the plate." Myatt went on to commend Donnini for presenting this plan to the Town. “I am really excited about this. I think there is some great, great potential in the Port Elgin waterfront," he said.

Councillor Dave Myette indicated this as a turning point for the Port Elgin Beach.

The MOU was passed unanimously.
