Saugeen Shores is set to welcome cyclists participating in the 2021 Great Lakes Waterfront Trail Adventure (GWTA) August 10.

Following a registration day Friday, August 6 at Blue Mountain Village, the group of 70 enthusiastic cyclists left on their multi-day tour Saturday and are travelling an average of 77 kilometres per day, arriving in Southampton from Lion's Head Tuesday.

The annual event celebrates and showcases communities along the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail, a 3600 kilometre signed route that runs from the Quebec border to Sault Ste. Marie and connects 155 communities and First Nations along the Canadian shores of the Great Lakes, read an August 10 media release from the Town of Saugeen Shores. The trail connects existing on and off-road facilities to create a continuous route.

“We are proud to be a part of this legacy initiative led by the Waterfront Regeneration Trust and excited that the event has proceeded in a modified way this year after being postponed in 2020”, said Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “As a bicycle-friendly community, initiatives such as these align with our vision of being a great place to ride a bike. We look forward to welcoming visitors exploring the Trail on their own for years to come," Charbonneau added.

The Great Lakes Waterfront Trail is a signature project of the Waterfront Regeneration Trust, a charity dedicated to protecting, connecting and celebrating the world’s largest body of freshwater. Saugeen Shores started working with the Waterfront Regeneration Trust in 2018 as part of the route expansion.
