The United Way of Bruce Grey (UWBG) is inviting Saugeen Shores and Kincardine residents to take part in their first ever Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) event on Saturday, February 25, 2023.

The evening walk aims to raise funds in support of people experiencing hunger, hurt and homelessness.

Since 2011 CNOY events have taken place in over 160 communities across the country, raising over $57,000 with all money raised staying in the local communities. "By walking together in the chill of the night, participants will better understand the experience of being on the streets during a cold Canadian winter, while raising funds to aid the work of United Way Bruce Grey in providing much-needed support," read a February 6 media release from UWBG.

United Way of Bruce Grey's has set their inaugural CNOY fundraising goal at $20,000 for both Saugeen Shores and Kincardine walks.

At the time of publishing, with 17 days remaining, 121 walkers and 28 teams had raised a total of $13,005 in Saugeen Shores; while in Kincardine 48 walkers and 18 teams had raised a total of $3,870.

The Saugeen Shores walk is set to begin and end at Coulter Parkette, the corner of Greeen and Goderich Street in Port Elgin while the Kincardine walk will get get underway at Knox Presbyterian Church, 345 Durham Street in Kincardine.

Participants can walk a 2 or 5 kilometre route with check-ins set to begin at 4pm. The walk will get underway at 5pm with a gathering to follow at the finish line. All those who raise over $150 (or $75 for youth) will have an opportunity to don a CNOY toque for their walk.
