The Environment Office for Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON) is calling on SON members and allies to join them on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 in Owen Sound for an Honour Our Treaties Rally and Walk.

A rally is set to get underway at 1:15pm at Gichi-Name Wiikwedong Reconciliation Garden, Nawash Park Kelso Beach in Owen Sound with a walk to the office of Federal MP Alex Ruff, 1101 2nd Avenue East to follow.

The walk is expected to get underway from Gichi-Name Wiikwedong Reconciliation Garden at 2pm with a rally to follow at the MP's office upon arrival.

"The Crown, representing Canada and Ontario, pledged in Treaty 45 1/2 to protect the Saugeen Peninsula for the Saugeen Anishnaabek but broke this promise, breaching both the treaty and its honour," read a statement from the SON Environment Office. "Instead of safeguarding the land, the Crown pushed for its acquisition through Treaty 72," the statement said.
