Saugeen Shores celebrates Canada Day

Locals, summer residents and visitors alike were met with overcast skies and cooler than normal summer temperatures for most of the day on July 1st but that didn't deter them from coming out in the thousands to enjoy a variety of Canada Day festivities on offer in Saugeen Shores.

Sidewalk sales were held throughout the day in downtown Port Elgin and live music played at the Farmers' Market at Coulter Parkette while shoppers were served up Canada Day cake compliments of the Port Elgin BIA.

In Southampton, the Southampton Art School & Gallery held their annual Sidewalk Chalk Extravaganza and there was plenty happening down at the 'Big Flag' in the evening including the Southampton Rotary Club's BBQ and popcorn from the Chantry Island Cham-bettes.

Children lined up for their face to be painted and the Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce sold a variety of Canada Day merchandise and glow products for families to enjoy.

Mayor Mike Smith spoke to the crowd before the Chantry Singers performed the national anthem and then continued to entertain on into the evening.

Dozens of kites flew on the beach with free kite flying being offered by Saugeen Shores PLAY.

A spectacular fireworks display was the perfect end to this year's celebrations.
