Winterhawks snag win over Muskies

Puck Drop rev3The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks continue to round into playoff shape with a 4-1 win over the Shelburne Muskies on Friday night in Port Elgin.

It's the fourth win of the month for the Winterhawks with the only blemish in January being an overtime loss to Durham.

It was a big night for the line of Andy Mitchell, Dave Mercer and Jay Thomson as they were in on all four goals with Mercer earning the Wismer House Player of the Game with a goal and three assists.

Shelburne's Ryan Halbych opened the scoring with a power play goal midway through the first after a sluggish start for the home team.

Andy Mitchell kickstarted the offence when he made a great move to get past a Shelburne defender and then rifled it past the Muskie goalie high on the glove side for his seventh goal of the season.

Dave Mercer's hard work paid off in the second period as he went to the net and sent home a loose puck in the crease to make it 2-1.

Mercer assisted on the Hawks third goal, a blast from the point by Brett Brophy. It was Brophy's first of the season.

Jay Thomson added an empty-netter with the assist going to Mercer making it a four point night for Mercer.

The win puts the Winterhawks in a tie for third place in the North Division with the Shallow Lake Crushers, who fell 3-1 to the Mapleton-Minto 81's on Friday night.

The Winterhawks will be back in action Saturday night as they travel to Lucknow for the final road game of the 2015/16 regular season. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
