Saugeen Golf Club played host to Port Elgin Rotary Club’s 23rd annual Jeff Preston Celebrity Golf Tournament in support of Muscular Dystrophy research July 20.

Dr Jeff Preston was born in Port Elgin and was diagnosed with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy when he was just 3 months old. Funds raised at the celebrity golf tournament goes to Jesse's Journey, a Canadian registered charitable organization that funds research for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

“$1.395 million is what we've raised to date, so we're going over $1.4 today,” said Port Elgin Rotary member and Tournament Chair Kevin Carter, later adding that Rotary had raised $25,000 for Jesse's Journey from this year’s golf tournament.

Port Elgin Rotary member Mark Kraemer said that Jesse's Journey‎ also had matching funding “which allows us to multiply our donations, which makes it really important that we maximize our dollars,” he said. “We pull $25,000 tonight, that means $50,000 is going in on our behalf.”

After arriving, golfers were treated to lunch by the Queen's Bar and Grill and a chance to browse and bid on numerous silent auction items. The tournament got underway with a shotgun start at noon followed by a roast beef dinner and live auction.
