A royal redemption in Grey Highlands

Lucas Ramallo, seen here in the Royals' home opener against the St. Mary's Mustangs September 19, played a big part in the win against the Lions Thursday.

After a disappointing last minute loss against the St. Mary’s Mustangs last week, the SDSS Royals found redemption in Grey Highlands against the Lions Thursday. In a submission to Saugeen Shores Hub, it was a solid team effort from the opening kickoff earning the Royals a 38-3 victory.

In the first quarter after marching down the field on their opening drive, Nick Scott handed the ball to Des Imeson who ran it in for the Royals first touchdown of the season. Lucas Ramallo kicked the conversion.

Mike Alison, a fourth year player and team captain, added to the scoresheet in the second quarter with a strong run to the end zone. Lewis Hendry set up the touchdown with a great catch and a long run down the field. Ramallo added the extra point.

After a quarterback sack by Isaac Bester in the second, Hendry got on the scoreboard after a catch from Scott and a long run followed by a short run into the end zone. Ramallo once again added the conversion.

After the half, the Royals continued to have solid play on the offensive end. Second year player Tyler Kobe scored his first touchdown of the season on a run with support from the offensive line.

Hendry scored his second of the game on a long pass from Scott, followed by a run to the goal posts.

In the fourth quarter, some of the rookies took over for the Royals and were able to gain some yardage on offense. Jack Van Geel, rookie quarterback, completed his first pass of his young career with Ramallo adding a field goal in the fourth quarter.

The defense was strong for the Royals, led by Jack Pilon, fifth year player and team captain, helping to hold the Lions to a single field goal. Quinn Fowler added an interception late in the fourth to stop the final drive.

When asked about the season so far, Head Coach Joey Wentworth said, “I am very happy with our dominant defense. Being able to hold opponents to 10 points in two games is something to be very proud of.”

“I am looking forward to improving on offense and getting things rolling there," added Wentworth as the team prepare to face the OSDSS Wolves next week.
