It’s time to lace up as the Rotary Huron Shore Run is fast approaching. The annual event that takes place in Southampton June 2 is now celebrating its 30th year of fundraising.

Proceeds go in support of the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Saugeen Track Club and the Southampton and Port Elgin Rotary Club with the Foundation getting the lion’s share.

Co-organizer June VanBastelaar said that some special surprises are being put together to culminate the 30th run at it, and there will be something for everyone, “every age group and fitness level,” she said.

“My favourite part is the free Kids Run organized by PLAY Bruce Grey,” said Van Bastelaar, who remarked that it’s a memorable and special sight to see the children ages 3 to 8 run as fast as they can during the 800 metre run from the starting line on Huron Street to the big flag and back. “It’s pretty cute to see them running down the street with their free shirts around their ankles,” she said.

Before the energy zapping Kids Run they will stretch and move to the music in their own specialized kid friendly warm-up.

The Rotary Huron Shore Run which has raised over $400,000 in its now three decades of existence, has a specialized race for runners who have graduated from the Kids Run and that is the 3km event for youth under the age of 14. The cost is $15 and goes towards fundraising efforts for the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation.

Other events include the 5km walk and the 5km, 10km and 1/2 marathon which was introduced to the Run during its 25th anniversary year. “It’s a fun community event and promotes healthy lifestyles,” said VanBastelaar.

The Run will again be followed by the Saugeen Shores Health and Wellness Fair just past the finish line at the Southampton Coliseum.
