With the help of club volunteers, the turtles, minnows and trout that habitat the Town Pond have 500 new pondmates as speckled trout were released with care into the popular pond located next to the Lake Huron Fishing Club's (LHFC) Chinook Hatchery, on Upper Avenue April 18.
The fish were made available through Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s (MNRF) fish stocking program and brought by truck from the Chatsworth Fish Culture Station. Speckled trout, which are known to be a more aggressive fish, will be able to be caught when trout season commences April 28.
LHFC President Phillip Hahn, who has volunteered for the club for over 20 years, said the club hopes that youth under the age of 16 who can fish for free get outdoors and learn to fish. “We want kids to enjoy it, that’s the whole point of doing it,” said Hahn, while stressing that anyone over the age of 16 must have a license.
The Lake Huron Fishing Club currently has 50 members, with volunteers manning the Fish Hatchery seven days a week.
The speckled trout will be available to catch for youth 16 years of age and under for free beginning April 28.

The fish were transported from the Chatsworth Fish Culture Station with many Lake Huron Fishing Club volunteers ready to bring the fish to the water.
Five-hundred speckled trout were released into the Town Pond, April 18.
Before the volunteers restocked the Town Pond, many were at work inside the Hatchery, like Ross McDonald who put food into the a mechanical feeder.
Inside the hatchery there are many fish still in the infant stages ready to be released.
The Lake Huron Fishing Club currently has 50 members who take turns monitoring the fish seven days a week.
