Student council members from GC Huston Public School, along with Principal Dan Russell, offered Saugeen Shores councillors an update on the bridge that spans the Saugeen River between Southampton and Saugeen First Nation and how it’s new name, Zgaa-biig-ni-gan (zgaa-beeg-ni-gun) which translated means ‘we are connected’, will be unveiled June 21 during Aboriginal Day celebrations. While the time of day has yet to be determined Principal Russell wanted to invite councillors and the community to the unveiling.

Huston Hawk and student council member Bella told councillors what the bridge truly means to the students. “Just like a bridge unites a community in a physical way, our gestures of peace, understanding and love toward one another bridge our differences and unite us in a very special way - as one family,” she said.

With help from Saugeen First Nation Elders, the students of GC Huston voted on the name for the new bridge.
